High-Yield Exam Strategy

Last-Minute Revision & Common Exam Traps

Designed for rapid review during the final 24 hours before the exam. Focuses on high-frequency concepts, fatal algebraic mistakes, and high-yield problem templates.

1. The 7 "Must Know" Theoretical Pillars

Pillar 1: Switching Invariance Rules

An unenergized inductor behaves as an open circuit at \(t = 0^+\) (\(i_L(0^+) = 0\)). An uncharged capacitor behaves as a short circuit at \(t = 0^+\) (\(v_C(0^+) = 0\)). Never attempt to calculate derivatives like \(\frac{di_L}{dt}(0^+)\) without writing KVL across the whole loop at \(t = 0^+\) first!

Pillar 2: Transformer Core Flux is Constant

The mutual core flux \(\Phi_m = \frac{V_1}{4.44 f N_1}\) depends strictly on primary voltage and supply frequency. It is independent of load current because secondary demagnetizing MMF \(N_2 I_2\) is instantly counterbalanced by an opposing primary load component MMF \(N_1 I_1'\).

Pillar 3: The Synchronous Speed Paradox

An induction motor can never run at synchronous speed \(N_s\) under motoring action. If \(N = N_s\), the relative velocity between the rotating magnetic field and rotor conductors becomes zero, induced rotor EMF drops to zero, rotor current drops to zero, and driving torque collapses to zero. Frictional losses will immediately slow the rotor down.

Pillar 4: Maximum Torque Independence

In a 3-phase induction motor, peak maximum breakdown torque \(T_{\text{max}} = \frac{k E_2^2}{2 X_2}\) is independent of rotor resistance \(R_2\). Adding external rotor resistance only increases starting torque and shifts the peak to a higher slip \(s_{mT} = R_2 / X_2\).

Pillar 5: Why DC Motors Require Starters

At starting, speed \(N = 0 \implies\) back EMF \(E_b = 0\). Starting current is \(I_{\text{start}} = \frac{V}{R_a}\). Since armature resistance \(R_a\) is extremely small (\(< 0.5\,\Omega\)), direct switching draws 15 to 25 times full-load current, blowing fuses, pitting commutators, and collapsing line voltage.

Pillar 6: Air Gap Reluctance Dominance

Even a tiny 2–4 mm air gap accounts for 80–90% of the total MMF in an iron magnetic circuit because air has a relative permeability of only \(\mu_r = 1\), whereas iron has \(\mu_r = 800 - 3000\).

Pillar 7: Transmission Matrix Output Convention

In the transmission (\(ABCD\)) parameter formulation, current \(I_2\) leaves the port, so the algebraic definition is \(V_1 = A V_2 - B I_2\) and \(I_1 = C V_2 - D I_2\). The negative sign must never be omitted during cascade multiplication!

2. Fatal Calculation Traps & How to Avoid Them

⚠️ Trap 1: Transformer Copper Loss vs Iron Loss Scaling

Mistake: Scaling both iron losses and copper losses by load fraction \(x^2\).
Correction: Iron loss \(P_i\) is constant (independent of load fraction \(x\)). Only copper loss scales as \(x^2 P_{cu,FL}\)! Total losses at load fraction \(x\) are \(P_{\text{total}} = P_i + x^2 P_{cu,FL}\).

⚠️ Trap 2: Series RLC vs Parallel RLC Damping Factor

Mistake: Using \(\alpha = \frac{R}{2L}\) for parallel RLC circuits.
Correction:
• For Series RLC: \(\alpha = \frac{R}{2L}\). Increasing \(R\) increases damping.
• For Parallel RLC: \(\alpha = \frac{1}{2RC}\). Increasing \(R\) decreases damping!

⚠️ Trap 3: Lap Winding vs Wave Winding Parallel Paths

Mistake: Using \(A = 2\) for all DC machines.
Correction:
• Lap Winding: \(A = P\) (number of parallel paths equals number of poles).
• Wave Winding: \(A = 2\) (always 2 parallel paths regardless of pole count).

⚠️ Trap 4: Transformer OC / SC Test Parameter Reference Side

Mistake: Forgetting which side tests were conducted on when calculating \(R_0, X_0, R_{eq}, X_{eq}\).
Correction:
• OC Test is performed on the LV side \(\implies\) gives \(R_0, X_0\) referred to LV.
• SC Test is performed on the HV side \(\implies\) gives \(R_{eq}, X_{eq}\) referred to HV.
• If asked for parameters referred to secondary, use \(K^2 = (V_2/V_1)^2\) to transfer the values!

⚠️ Trap 5: Bode Plot Low-Frequency Reference Line

Mistake: Drawing the low-frequency asymptote at height \(20\log_{10} K\) at \(\omega = 0\).
Correction: Since \(\log_{10}(0) = -\infty\), \(\omega = 0\) does not exist on a logarithmic axis! For a transfer function with poles at the origin (\(1/s\) or \(1/s^2\)), the low-frequency asymptote passes through \(20\log_{10} K_B\) precisely at \(\omega = 1\text{ rad/s}\).
